There is a sublime quality in what endures time: its imperfection. Incoherence. Chaos.
Echoes. A story is made up of reminiscences and abysses, as much as dreams and multiple possibilities of love. A body is a portal that has been open for centuries, and this is how we find our ancestors in ourselves.
The works presented by artist Caroline Ricca Lee with the Fondazione Oelle at the Artissima Fair 2024, under the ISOLA SICILIA Prize, reveal the convergence of their research, which delves into the archiving and memory from decolonial and feminist perspective, with the Sicilian territory.
By investigating the reminiscences of ancient times, Ricca understands how a story only lasts over time unfinished: parts are lost, faded, and stolen. It's impossible to pass through time unscathed. But enduring even after trauma carries the beauty of a life that doesn't give up on its radiance. There is no greater symbol of courage and persistence than to remain alive even after centuries and millennia.
Thus, listening to these echoes, the artist was particularly inspired by signs of local culture, such as the sacrifice of the saints, the Ex-volto, the puppet culture, and the Sicilian history as an assembly of many many peoples.
