A stream of water passes through a stack of one hundred sheets of uso mano porous paper, sequentially encountering pure acrylic pigment and, at times, improvised flow diverters. This initial gesture sets in motion a process through logical patterns and stumbles, generating a space that incorporates images, musical scores, surfaces, video frames, and three-dimensional sound forms.
“Space is the experience in which everything exposes itself to being traversed by everything else and strives to traverse the world,” writes Emanuele Coccia, describing mescolanza—mixture or intermingling—as the generative principle at the origin of the world.
It is precisely in the reciprocity between the singular and the universal that lies the alchemy enabling Leopoldo Mazzoleni to transform flow into coherent, logical forms that nevertheless give rise to indeterminate emotions, apprehended simultaneously through the eye, the stomach, and the mind. Mazzoleni’s investigation of flows addresses precisely these questions: becoming, mescolanza, and the relationship between process and individual perception.
Beginning with a scientifically defined process, he composes a score whose initial reading takes the form of a pictorial texture, only to gradually become something else. The diagram summarises the chosen trajectory while emphasising the stumbles introduced by the artist’s intentions. In this way, the process becomes increasingly anthropomorphised, ultimately transforming into an experience of pure poetry.
This slow and inexorable expansion of physical and mental space generates new encounters and experiences. Particularly significant is Mazzoleni’s collaboration with the artist and sound engineer Michele Spadaro, through which his work is interpreted by algorithms capable of introducing further layers of singularity and transforming it into an immersive, autonomous sonic experience in 3D.
The exhibition revolves around two large-scale installations composed of different elements that may initially appear incoherent, yet are mutually necessary and intrinsically interconnected. Together, they form a relational system in which each component acquires meaning through its encounter with the others.
